In the Beginning ... With Purpose

Though a sector of science would insist we believe in evolution, God’s word tells us that we were specifically and purposefully created - and purposefully created for a purpose. That sense of purpose is hard-wired into each of us and we will find no rest until we begin to fulfil the purpose for which we have been created. If we have just evolved out of what started up as an accidental, chance in a trillion explosion of nothing which somehow formed all the right conditions at the right time to accidentally and magically evolve life, how could we ever imagine we have a purpose?? Why would we even consider purpose? We are here by accident - where is the purpose is that? But God tells us clearly - both in the Old Testament as well as the New, that He  created and that He had a purpose in that creation. This sense of purpose is hard-wired into each of us. Are you living out the purpose for which you have been created? Does your sense of purpose colour and fragrance every aspect of your life?

Then Man ... Purpose Lost

God is love. His very essence is love and so when He created man, He created him with a will - an ability to make his own choices. For love to be love, it must be a voluntary response, not an automated response. And so in an environment of complete perfection and in an atmosphere of perfect relationship with his creator, man was given one law, and only one law. That law was broken as Adam and Eve listened to Satan as he told them that if they ate the forbidden fruit, they could be “like God.” As they took of that fruit, they effectively declared their desire to be independent of God  - to be like God and have the right to make their own decisions regarding good and evil. As they did this, their connection with the Source of Life was severed and with it, their created purpose was negated. Your created purpose is tied up in your relationship with your Creator. Your created purpose has the seeds of Life within it. Living outside of your created purpose is mere existence. Are you living according to your created purpose? Or are you merely existing?

Then God ... A New Begining

Separation from the Source of Life results in death and so the declaration of independence by Man from the Source of Life, brought death to all the descendants of Adam. But God in His very essence is Love and Love could not just watch the object of its love die without doing all it possibly could to restore Life. And so God sent His Son in the form of man to die for man and in so doing, to provide the way for man to be once again ‘connected’ to the Source of Life, The Bible tells us that “The life of the flesh is on the blood,” (Lev 17:11) and so Jesus had to shed His blood so that He could make His life available to us so that we may partake in His Life. God has done all that is needed to make reconciliation possible; now the choice is yours. When we choose to accept God’s invitation to be reconciled to Him on His terms, and accept by faith that Jesus has done everything necessary to effect that reconciliation, then God works a miracle within us, re-birthing us spiritually. God gives us a new heart and a new spirit - one that is once again able to connect to the Source of Life. He also gives us His Holy Spirit to indwell us and to form us into the person He originally created us to be.   And Now? As I typed this heading, the Scripture came to mind, “He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice (literally meaning to do what is right), to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” Mic 6:8 Jesus said that the entire set of commandments were summed up in two commandments : To love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your mind, with all your strength, and with all your soul, and to love your neighbour as yourself. Here is our purpose. God is Love and we are created in His image - the image of perfect Love. That image was lost in the Garden of Eden, but the Holy Spirit begins to re-create it when we come to Christ in faith. Our Purpose is to be filled with the Love of God so that it overflows out of us causing us to love others with the same love with which Jesus loved us. Paul said, “Present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God which is your spiritual service of worship.” Rom 12:1. How do you do this? “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.” Rom 12:2 This is your purpose: an intimate love relationship with God that spills over as a life laid down for God and others so that He may be glorified in all that we are and all that we do. There is nothing more fulfilling that this and until we find our rest here, we will forever seek to find something that will satisfy the aching void, but whatever we take a hold of will only turn around and enslave us in a cruel and demanding bondage. We were created in the image of Love and we will only find satisfaction at the Source of that Love - no other love can ever fully satisfy either. Are you deeply connected to that Source of Love and Life?
