The Main Thing?

“The main thing is to keep the main thing

the main thing.” S. Covey

What is the main main thing?

Some will say that the main thing is different things to different people. Perhaps. I know that Stephan Covey is talking about the main thing being your mission and purpose in life and from the frame of his teaching that is good, but is that the main thing overall in our lives, or is there a more encompassing main thing that filters down through every area of our existence? When we come to the end of our careers, or find ourselves unemployed, and we look back on our lives and find basically nothing of substance remaining after many years of hard, dedicated service, then we may begin to wonder whether our main thing really was the main thing. Or when you have really poured everything into your goals and mission, only to collapse in a burnt-out heap, the question arises : Was my main thing really the main thing? As I found myself in this place, and saw the shattered fragments of my life lying around my feet, I noticed that a splintered faith was lying amongst the pieces… So much of what we are taught in our churches today, is little more than fragmented snippets of often misunderstood concepts taught as disjointed truths that foster intellectual religion as opposed to reality of a loving, warm, meaningful relationship with our God, in whose image we have been created. As a result we are not standing on the solid rock of truth, but rather the shale of conflicting  and contradictory thinking that offers no stability in the storms of life. Focus On Purpose seeks to set the spotlight on the main main thing : The building of a real and intimate relationship with the Creator God, in whose image we have been created. If we do not know Him, we cannot know what we have been created to be, and it is only in knowing who we are created to be, that we will find true and lasting fulfillment in life. The Main main thing is to know Him intimately, and in knowing Him, to love Him with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength. And then, to let that love spill over to our neighbour so that we love them as we then love ourselves, and how the world cries out for such a love.
As you touch or hover over each picture in the four small squares above, they will be magnified in the main square. This demonstrates what happens in our minds; what we focus on becomes enlarged in our minds, to the exclusion of other things. When we get to see a larger frame, and see how the smaller parts fit together, our understanding often shifts.
