Wednesday October 30, 2013 – What’s Heaven Saying about You?

“The Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? For there is no one like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, fearing God and turning away from evil.” Job 1:9 Recently I listened to someone tell me that it is impossible to please God and to live up to His standards for us, so we may as well not even try. This is a comment I often hear as people try to defend their carelessness before God. What are your thoughts about this statement? Is it true? In the light of God's comments about Job, would you say it is impossible to please God? Job was a man, a human being, so he was also a sinner, just like the rest of us. But God saw Job as blameless and upright. I'm not sure about you, but that sounds to be as though God was pretty happy with Job. I am not talking about salvation here. The Bible is clear that there is only one way in which we can and must be saved, and that is through Jesus Christ. Job lived in the Old Testament and people were brought into relationship with God as they looked forward toward the promised coming of Messiah. If Job was able to please God, what prevents us from pleasing Him? The Old Testament people did not have the Holy Spirit permanently indwelling them, we do. What is the purpose of the Spirit? Paul tells us that Jesus, death set us free from slavery to sin; if we are not slaves to sin, then what stops us from pleasing God? As you think about God's description of Job, what thoughts come to mind? Is this what you would want Him to be saying about you? How serious are you about that desire? What does being pleasing to Him mean to you? What images does it bring to mind? What are the thoughts in the back of your mind? What fears come to the fore? What is more important : your comfort zone and pleasure? Or knowing that the Creator God and His Son Jesus Christ take great pleasure in you? Jesus said that if we love Him, we will do what He has told us to do. Would He set an impossible standard for us to show our love to Him? Would He set the bar so high that the creatures He created to love Him, would never be able to express their love in an acceptable way? Does the Bible teach that it is impossible to please God? What does it say about how we can please Him?
